Turning 54 feels different than I thought it would.
When I was younger, I assumed this age would feel “old.” But honestly? It doesn’t. It feels reflective. Softer. Wiser. More grounded. More aware of what truly matters and what absolutely does not.
Life has humbled me, stretched me, healed me, surprised me, broken me, rebuilt me, and carried me through seasons I never imagined I’d survive. And through all of it, Jesus has remained faithful.
So here are a few things this 54-year-old heart has learned along the way.
1. Peace is expensive – protect it.
I used to think I had to stay in every room, fight every battle, prove every point, and carry every relationship. Not anymore. Peace matters. The older I get, the more I realize that protecting your emotional, mental, and spiritual peace is not weakness – it’s wisdom.
2. Not every closed door is rejection.
Some doors close because God is protecting you. Some endings are actually mercy in disguise. Looking back, there are things I cried over that I now thank God for.
3. Healing takes honesty.
You cannot heal what you continue to hide. Healing began for me when I stopped pretending I was “fine” and finally allowed Jesus into the broken places. Real healing is holy work, sis.
4. Strong women still need comfort too.
Women carry so much quietly. We show up for everyone else while silently running on empty. One thing I’ve learned is that strength and softness can coexist. Even strong women need rest, encouragement, prayer, and safe people.
5. Your circle matters deeply.
At this age, I value genuine people more than impressive people. Give me honest friends, peaceful conversations, loyalty, laughter, prayer, and people who make me feel safe to simply be myself.
6. Rest is productive too.
Whew… this one took me YEARS to learn. Not every moment has to be hustle, pressure, fixing, striving, or proving. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is sit down, drink your coffee, breathe, and let yourself rest.
7. Your body whispers before it screams.
At 54, I’ve learned to pay attention to my body, my stress level, my emotions, and my limits. We cannot pour from empty forever. Slowing down is not failure.
8. Confidence becomes quieter with age.
I don’t feel the same need to impress people anymore. Confidence at this age feels less flashy and more settled. It’s knowing who you are, knowing Whose you are, and no longer needing constant validation from others.
9. God really does rebuild lives.
I am living proof of that. There were seasons I thought would destroy me. Seasons of heartbreak, fear, exhaustion, disappointment, trauma, and uncertainty. But somehow, through grace and healing, God kept rebuilding me piece by piece.
10. Jesus is still my everything.
After all these years… He is still faithful. Still kind. Still near to the brokenhearted. Still restoring. Still redeeming. Still carrying me. And honestly? The older I get, the more beautiful He becomes to me.
And on the real:
- Skincare matters, sis. Especially the face, eyes, neck, and hands. We’re moisturizing EVERYTHING over here now.
- That same 14 pounds you gain and lose every 2 months? Honestly… who even cares anymore.
- Short heels and sneakers are cute and my feet would like to personally thank me.
- The messy bun, oversized sweatshirt, no-makeup look? Sexy.
- Smiling makes women beautiful. Truly. Joy changes a face more than makeup ever could
- Confidence is attractive. Not arrogance. Not perfection. Just a woman finally comfortable in her own skin.
54 doesn’t feel old to me.
It feels redeemed. It feels earned. It feels good.
And for that, I’m deeply thankful.
