This morning during my prayer time, the Lord gently reminded me of the story of Martha and Mary.
I’ve read it countless times before, but today it felt different.
Maybe because lately, I’ve been Martha.
Not the frustrated Martha. Not the complaining Martha. Just the busy Martha.
The Martha trying to figure everything out.
The Martha worrying about finances.
The Martha thinking about work.
The Martha wondering what the future holds.
The Martha carrying responsibilities, making plans, solving problems, and trying to keep all the plates spinning.
Life has felt heavy lately. Not necessarily bad – just full.
And somewhere along the way, without even realizing it, I became more focused on managing my life than sitting with Jesus.
In Luke 10, Martha was busy preparing, serving, working, and taking care of everything that needed to be done. Mary, on the other hand, simply sat at Jesus’ feet and listened.
From a practical perspective, Martha wasn’t doing anything wrong. Things needed to get done. Meals needed to be prepared. Responsibilities still existed.
But Jesus gently told her something profound:
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better…”
The words that stood out to me this morning were the better thing.
Not the productive thing.
Not the urgent thing.
Not the responsible thing.
The better thing.
Sitting with Jesus.
Listening.
Being still.
Receiving before doing.
Lately, I’ve spent so much time asking God to help me carry everything that I’ve forgotten to simply sit with Him and let Him carry me.
I’ve been bringing Him my to-do list.
My worries.
My questions.
My plans.
My concerns.
But today, I sensed Him saying, “Rose, come sit with Me.”
Not because He needs anything from me.
Not because I haven’t been doing enough.
Not because He’s disappointed.
Simply because He misses me.
What a beautiful thought.
The God of the universe doesn’t just want my service.
He wants my presence.
He doesn’t just want my work.
He wants my heart.
He doesn’t just want my hands busy for Him.
He wants me sitting at His feet.
Sometimes we convince ourselves that if we can just solve the problem, make the plan, pay the bill, find the answer, fix the situation, or get through the next season, then we’ll have time to rest.
But Jesus offers rest first.
Peace first.
Presence first.
Relationship first.
Everything else can wait.
This morning reminded me that I don’t need another strategy.
I need His presence.
I don’t need another answer.
I need the Answer.
I don’t need to work harder.
I need to sit longer.
The dishes will still be there.
The emails will still be there.
The responsibilities will still be there.
But this moment with Jesus is the better thing.
And today, that’s what I’m choosing.
Not perfection.
Not striving.
Not fixing.
Just sitting at His feet.
And honestly?
My soul needed it more than I realized.
“One thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” ~ Luke 10:42
