“I will go before you and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the Lord, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel.” ~ Isaiah 45:2–3
There are parts of my story I would have never chosen. Seasons that felt hidden. Prayers that sounded like echoes. Valleys that seemed to go on far longer than I thought I could survive.
There was a time in my life when everything felt that way – hidden pain, hidden shame, hidden fractures in my heart that I didn’t have words for.
I learned how to survive in those places. I learned how to function, how to smile, how to keep moving forward – but inside I felt like I was living behind gates I could not open and bars I could not break.
And yet, when I look back now, I see something I could not see then:
God was already there.
“I will go before you… I will break down gates of bronze… I will give you treasures in the darkness and riches stored in secret places.” ~ Isaiah 45:2–3
Before I knew His name the way I know it now… before 1995, before rescue, before healing had language – He was going before me.
He was preserving the life of a little girl who did not expect to live past 30. He was holding me together in seasons where dissociation was the only way I knew how to cope. He was guarding my heart when I didn’t yet know how to give it to Him.
I thought I was alone.
But I wasn’t.
The gates in my life were real – silence, trauma, fear, broken identity, the constant striving to be enough.
And I could not break them down by being stronger. I could not pray them away in a single moment. I could not outgrow them.
Jesus had to cut through them.
And He did – slowly, gently, faithfully.
Not just when I first met Him, but in the years that followed… in counseling rooms, in tear-stained prayers, in the daily choosing to renew my mind, in the private surrender no one else saw.
Those were my secret places.
And that is where the treasures were.
Not after. Not once the healing was complete. Not once life looked pretty and polished.
In the darkness.
There is a kind of knowing that can only be found there – not the knowing of theology or head knowledge, but the deep, unshakable, I-have-met-Him-here knowing.
I would not know Him as Healer if I had never been shattered.
I would not know Him as Restorer if nothing in my life had been lost.
I would not know the tenderness of His voice if I had never sat in the silence, feeling forgotten.
I found intimacy with Him in the dark. I found His voice in the night. I found my true identity in the middle of the healing process – not at the end of it.
The greatest gifts of my life did not come from the easy seasons.
They came from the hidden ones. They came from the places where all I had was Jesus.
That is where my compassion was born. That is where my voice found its oil. That is where Redeemed was written – not just on paper, but in my life. That is where Renewed began – in the slow restoration of my mind. That is where Adored was conceived – in the deep realization that I was not just saved, but fully loved.
Treasures like:
Intimacy. Dependence. Unshakeable faith. A personal, lived revelation of His goodness. Hearing His whisper when my heart was breaking. Discovering that my story was not something to hide – it was the very place His glory rests.
For so many years I thought my past disqualified me. Now I know it is the place where I met Him. The darkness was never empty. It was a secret place. And it was filled with Him.
And the reason He does this – the reason He walks with us through it instead of around it – is not for a platform, or a book, or a ministry.
It is this:
“So that you may know that I am the Lord… who calls you by name.”
That is my testimony.
I know Him.
Not as an idea. Not as a distant God. But as the One who walked into my darkness and filled it with treasures.
So if you are in a season that feels hidden… if you are walking through something you don’t understand… if your healing feels slow… if your story feels marked by places you wish were different – take heart.
There are treasures there too.
Not because the darkness is good, but because He is.
He does not waste the dark. He meets you in it.
And one day you will look back and see that the very places you thought would destroy you became the secret rooms where you learned His heart.
Pause & Reflect
What have you learned about God in your hardest seasons that you could not have learned any other way?
Where have you experienced His presence in what once felt like darkness?
How is your story becoming a treasure for others?
Lord, thank You for going before me even when I did not know You were there. Thank You for the treasures You placed in the hidden and painful places of my life. Open my eyes to see my story the way You do – redeemed, restored, and filled with purpose. Teach me to trust that nothing I walk through is wasted, and that even in the dark, You are giving me deeper revelation of Your heart. Amen.
