I saw something recently that stopped me in my tracks: Jesus: “It is written.” Satan: “Is it written?” Know the difference.
Whew. I sat with that one for a minute because there is SO much truth in those few words.
From the very beginning, the enemy’s strategy wasn’t necessarily to convince Eve that God didn’t exist. Think about that. He didn’t walk into the garden and say, “There is no God.” He simply got her to question what God had said. “Did God really say…?” (Genesis 3:1)
And honestly, I think that same question has been echoing ever since. Did God really say? Did God really create us? Did He really get to define what is good and what isn’t? Do we really need a Savior? Is Jesus really the only way? Can we really trust a book written that long ago? Maybe that was only for back then. Maybe we misunderstood it. Maybe God didn’t really mean it that way. Maybe truth looks different now. Maybe there are lots of ways to God.
Different questions. Same whisper. Did God really say?
Now please hear my heart because I think this part matters. I don’t believe God is afraid of our questions. I don’t think He gets nervous when someone says, “I’m not sure I believe any of this.” I don’t think honest doubt puts you outside of His reach. Not even close.
If anything, I believe God welcomes the person who genuinely wants to know the truth. Ask Him. Seek Him. Wrestle with it.
But at some point, every one of us has to decide what we are going to do with what God has said. Because Christianity isn’t just believing there is a God. It’s believing God. And there is a HUGE difference.
I can believe you exist and still not believe a word you tell me. And maybe that’s where the real struggle is for a lot of people. The question isn’t only, “Do I believe there’s a God out there somewhere?” The deeper question is: Do I believe Him? Do I believe what He says about Himself? Do I believe what He says about me? Do I believe what He says about sin? Do I believe what He says about forgiveness? And ultimately, do I believe what He said about His Son?
Because Jesus said something pretty bold: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
He didn’t say, “I know a way.” He said, “I am the way.”
And I think this is where things can get uncomfortable. Because Jesus doesn’t really leave us with the option of simply thinking He was a nice guy with some beautiful things to say. His words eventually bring us to a decision: Do I believe Him or not?
And listen, I understand why that can be hard. Because surrender is hard. Sometimes what God says bumps right up against what we want to be true. Sometimes His Word challenges the way we live, the way we think, the choices we make, and even the way we see ourselves.
But here’s the thing: Changing what God said doesn’t change what God said. We can edit it. Reinterpret it. Ignore it. Decide it doesn’t fit our lives anymore. But that doesn’t change the truth.
The question from the garden is still being whispered: “Did God really say?” And Jesus’ answer is still: “It is written.”
Maybe you’re reading this and you don’t believe the Bible. Maybe you’re not even sure you believe in God. I’m not here to shame you into believing, and I definitely can’t argue you into loving Jesus.
But I will ask you this: Please don’t dismiss Him without seeking Him for yourself. Don’t base your entire opinion of Jesus on Christians you’ve met. Don’t base it on church hurt. Don’t base it on a TikTok, a podcast, something you heard growing up, or even something someone told you about the Bible. Go find out for yourself.
Open the Gospel of John and read the words of Jesus. Ask the hard questions. Tell God you have doubts. Tell Him you don’t know what you believe. You don’t need churchy words. You don’t need a perfectly put-together prayer. You can literally start here: “God, if You are real, I want to know You. Show me the truth about Jesus.” And then keep seeking.
Because faith isn’t pretending you don’t have questions. Sometimes faith begins when you realize there is Someone trustworthy enough to bring your questions to.
For me, after everything I’ve walked through, this has become deeply personal. I don’t just believe in God. I believe Him. I believe what He said. I believe His Word. I believe Jesus is who He said He is.
Have I had questions? Absolutely. Have I understood everything? Not even close. 😂 But I have walked with Him long enough to know that He is trustworthy.
So when the world asks, “Is it really written?” I want my life to answer: Yes. It is written. And I trust the One who said it.
Maybe today you don’t. Maybe you’re still questioning whether God is real. Maybe you wonder if the Bible can actually be trusted. Maybe you’re not convinced Jesus is who He said He is. Okay. Start there. Just don’t stop there. Seek Him for yourself.
And if you’re reading this and something in your heart is stirring, if you want to know Jesus but you have absolutely no idea where to begin, reach out to me. Seriously. No judgment. No pressure. You don’t have to clean yourself up first. You don’t have to know the Bible. You don’t have to have all the answers. I would be honored to talk with you, pray with you, and help you take that first step toward Him.
Maybe you’ve spent your whole life asking, “Is it really written?” Maybe it’s time to open the Book and find out for yourself.
