I Trade My Will for Yours

There has been a quiet work happening in my heart lately.

Not loud. Not dramatic. Just the gentle, persistent voice of the Holy Spirit reminding me of something I thought I had already surrendered.

My will.

I’ve always wanted God’s blessing. I’ve prayed over decisions. I’ve asked Him to open doors and make a way. But recently, the Lord has lovingly exposed something in me that I hadn’t fully recognized.

Too often, I’ve made my plans… and then invited God into them.

“Lord, bless this.”

“Lord, make this work.”

“Lord, open this door.”

There isn’t necessarily anything sinful about having dreams or making plans. Scripture even says that we make our plans, but the Lord establishes our steps. Yet somewhere along the way, I realized I had become more committed to my plans than I was surrendered to His.

That realization humbled me.

I began asking myself a hard question:

What if God’s best for me looks different than what I’ve been praying for?

Would I still trust Him?

Would I still worship Him?

Would I still follow Him?

The more I sat with those questions, the more I realized that following Jesus has never been about getting Him to endorse my agenda. It’s always been about laying mine down.

Jesus Himself showed us what surrender looks like.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, knowing the suffering that lay ahead, He prayed,

“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42)

Those words have echoed in my spirit.

Not my will.

Yours.

If the perfect, sinless Son of God surrendered His own will to the Father, how much more should I?

I’ve also realized something else.

Sometimes we pray for God to open doors that He, in His mercy, is trying to keep shut.

We fight for opportunities He never intended us to have.

We cling to relationships He has asked us to release.

We chase dreams that were born from our own ambition instead of His calling.

Then we wonder why there is no peace.

Could it be that the absence of peace is sometimes God’s loving invitation to stop pushing and start listening?

I’m learning that surrender isn’t losing.

It’s trusting.

It’s believing that God’s plans are infinitely wiser than mine.

That His timing is better.

That His detours are purposeful.

That His “no” is just as loving as His “yes.”

Proverbs tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Not some of my ways.

All of them.

My career.

My family.

My ministry.

My writing.

My finances.

My future.

Everything.

I’ve spent enough years trying to figure life out on my own. I’ve learned that when I insist on having my own way, I often create unnecessary heartache. But when I surrender my way to Him, I find something far greater than control.

I find peace.

Real peace doesn’t come from knowing exactly where God is leading.

It comes from knowing the One who is leading me.

So today my prayer has become incredibly simple.

“Lord, I trade my will for Yours.”

If You want me to stay, I’ll stay.

If You want me to go, I’ll go.

If You close the door I’ve been praying would open, I’ll trust that You see what I cannot.

If You rewrite every page of my story, then write it exactly the way You want.

Because at the end of my life, I don’t want to stand before Jesus having accomplished all of my dreams.

I want to stand before Him knowing I walked in His.

Lord, teach me to hold every plan with open hands.

Help me love Your presence more than my preferences.

Help me desire Your voice more than my own ideas.

Help me seek Your Kingdom before my own ambitions.

Today, I willingly lay down my plans, my expectations, and my timeline.

I trade my will for Yours.

Because Your will has never failed.

And neither will You.
